Tool steel weight calculator
Work out the theoretical weight of tool and mould steel round bar, flat bar and block from their dimensions. The calculation uses the density of the steel you choose; high-chromium steels such as 1.2379 (7.7 g/cm³) are slightly lighter than the others.
Calculate the weight from the size, or the length and number of pieces needed for a target weight. Your selections are added to the quote message automatically.
Size: Ø30 × 1000 mm, quantity: 1 (theoretical ~5.44 kg)
How is tool steel weight calculated?
Weight is volume multiplied by density. With all dimensions in millimetres, the result in kilograms is (ρ: density in g/cm³; 7.85 for 1.2312; 7.7 for 1.2379 and 7.65 for 1.2085):
- Flat bar and block: thickness × width × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
- Round bar: 0.7854 × diameter² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
Example: a 1.2312 mould steel flat bar of 50 × 200 mm section and 500 mm length = 50 × 200 × 500 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000 = 39.3 kg.

Frequently asked questions
What is the density of tool steels?
We use 7.85 g/cm³ for 1.2312, 1.2767 and 1.2842, 7.7 g/cm³ for 1.2379 and 7.65 g/cm³ for 1.2085. Steels with a high chromium content have a slightly lower density.
How is the weight of a tool steel block calculated?
Multiply the thickness, width and length (mm), then multiply by the density and divide by 1,000,000. For example, a 50 × 200 × 500 mm 1.2312 block weighs about 39.3 kg and the same size in 1.2379 about 38.5 kg.
How much does 1 metre of tool steel round bar weigh?
For 1.2312, 1.2767 and 1.2842 (7.85 g/cm³), 1 metre of Ø50 mm bar weighs about 15.41 kg and Ø100 mm about 61.65 kg. In 1.2379 the same sizes weigh about 15.12 kg and 60.48 kg.
Why can the delivered weight differ from the calculated weight?
The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight can differ slightly because of the thickness, diameter and wall-thickness tolerances allowed by the standards and the cutting allowance. For products sold by weight, we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.
