Frequently asked questions

Is 1.2379 supplied annealed, and does it need hardening?

The standard supply condition is soft annealed (max. 255 HB), and machining is done in this condition. After machining, the tool is hardened from 1000–1050 °C and tempered; the working hardness is usually 56–62 HRC, depending on the application. A lower hardness is chosen for dies that cut thick or hard sheet.

Can 1.2379 be nitrided or coated?

Yes. If the tool is to be nitrided or PVD-coated, it is hardened from 1050–1080 °C and tempered at 500–525 °C (the secondary-hardening route), so that it does not lose hardness at the nitriding or coating temperature.

What is the difference between 1.2379 and 1.2842?

1.2379 has higher wear resistance, changes less in size during heat treatment and through-hardens in large sections, so it is preferred for long production runs. 1.2842 is an oil-hardening steel that is easier to machine and grind, suited to short and medium runs and to tools of thin and medium section.

When is 1.2379 the wrong choice?

Where impact, bending or edge chipping is the main risk, such as thick sheet, scrap shears or tools with sharp corners. Tougher grades such as 1.2767, 8 % chromium steels or powder-metallurgy cold-work steels are used instead.

Can hardened 1.2379 be wire-EDM cut?

Yes. An additional temper about 15–25 °C below the last tempering temperature is recommended afterwards. For blocks thicker than 50 mm, the secondary-hardening route (high-temperature tempering) and relief holes drilled before hardening reduce the risk of cracking.

What are the designations for 1.2379?

1.2379: X153CrMoV12, AISI ≈ D2, JIS ≈ SKD11, UNS ≈ T30402. Any of these designations can be used in your enquiry; we will match the correct material.

Why can the invoiced weight differ from the calculated weight?

The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight varies with dimensional tolerances and cutting allowance; we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.

What information should I send for a quote?

We only need the size (diameter × length), quantity and delivery location. If you fill in the calculator above, these details are added to the WhatsApp message automatically.
