1.2842 Cold-Work Tool Steel
Oil-hardening cold-work tool steel with about 0.9 % carbon and 2 % manganese (90MnCrV8, AISI O2). It keeps its size well in heat treatment and holds a good cutting edge, making it an economical choice for cutting dies, gauges and shear blades.

Frequently asked questions
Which section sizes is 1.2842 suited to?
1.2842 is oil-hardening and its depth of hardening is limited: producers give full hardening up to sections of about 20–40 mm. It therefore suits tools and dies of thin and medium section; for thicker parts, the air-hardening 1.2379 is preferred.
Is 1.2842 supplied annealed?
The standard supply condition is soft annealed (max. 229 HB). The part is machined in this condition, then hardened from 790–820 °C in oil and tempered.
Why is 1.2842 called an oil-hardening steel?
Because it is hardened by quenching in oil or a hot salt bath. In the Turkish market the name “yağ çeliği” (oil steel) refers to the whole group of oil-hardening tool steels, which also includes 1.2510, not to a single grade.
Can 1.2842 be nitrided or coated?
It is not recommended. Because it is tempered at low temperature, it loses hardness at nitriding and PVD coating temperatures. Where nitriding or coating is needed, 1.2379 is preferred.
What are the designations for 1.2842?
1.2842: 90MnCrV8, AISI ≈ O2. Any of these designations can be used in your enquiry; we will match the correct material.
Why can the invoiced weight differ from the calculated weight?
The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight varies with dimensional tolerances and cutting allowance; we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.
What information should I send for a quote?
We only need the size (diameter × length), quantity and delivery location. If you fill in the calculator above, these details are added to the WhatsApp message automatically.
