1.2085 Stainless Mould Steel
Pre-hardened, sulphur-alloyed stainless plastic mould steel with about 16 % chromium (X33CrS16). It resists moisture, cooling water and mildly corrosive plastics, and machines easily at its supplied hardness. It is used for mould frames and bolsters and for corrosion-resistant mould components.

Frequently asked questions
Is 1.2085 completely rust-proof?
It resists humid air, condensation, cooling water and mildly corrosive plastics well, but it is corrosion-resistant rather than rust-proof. The sulphur added for machinability makes it somewhat less resistant than 1.2316 or 1.2083. Its corrosion resistance is best on a clean, polished surface.
Why use 1.2085 for mould bases?
In carbon-steel plates, cooling channels rust and scale up over time, so cooling becomes uneven and cycle times get longer. Rust also makes plates stick together and damages guide bores. 1.2085 reduces these problems, and is chosen in particular for corrosive plastics such as PVC, for humid plants and for moulds with stainless cavity inserts.
Can 1.2085 be used for mould cavities?
It can be used where the surface requirement is technical only. Producers do not recommend it for polished, textured or etched cavities; sulphur-free stainless mould steels such as 1.2316 or 1.2083 are used there.
Does 1.2085 need heat treatment?
No. It is supplied pre-hardened to 280–325 HB and is machined and used at this hardness. It can be re-hardened to about 48 HRC, but this is rarely done.
What are the designations for 1.2085?
1.2085: X33CrS16, AISI ≈ 420FM. Any of these designations can be used in your enquiry; we will match the correct material.
Why can the invoiced weight differ from the calculated weight?
The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight varies with dimensional tolerances and cutting allowance; we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.
What information should I send for a quote?
We only need the size (diameter × length), quantity and delivery location. If you fill in the calculator above, these details are added to the WhatsApp message automatically.
