Copper weight calculator

Work out the theoretical weight of copper sheet, strip, rod, flat bar and tube from its dimensions. Choose Cu-ETP, Cu-DHP or one of the speciality copper alloys from the grade list and the calculation uses that grade’s density.

Calculate the weight from the size, or the number of sheets needed for a target weight. Your selections are added to the quote message automatically.

How is copper weight calculated?

Weight is volume multiplied by density. With all dimensions in millimetres, the result in kilograms is (ρ: density in g/cm³; 8.9 for Cu-ETP):

  • Sheet, strip and flat bar: thickness × width × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Round bar: 0.7854 × diameter² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Tube and bush: 3.1416 × (outside diameter − wall) × wall × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000

Example: a 2 × 1000 × 2000 mm Cu-ETP copper sheet = 2 × 1000 × 2000 × 8.9 ÷ 1,000,000 = 35.6 kg.

Frequently asked questions

How much does 1 metre of copper tube weigh?

The weight of copper tube depends on its outside diameter and wall thickness. For example, 1 metre of Ø15 × 1 mm copper tube weighs about 0.39 kg and 1 metre of Ø22 × 1 mm tube about 0.59 kg. The table and calculator on this page cover other sizes.

What is the density of copper?

We use 8.9 g/cm³ for electrolytic tough pitch copper (Cu-ETP) and 8.94 g/cm³ for phosphorus-deoxidised copper (Cu-DHP). Speciality copper alloys range from 8.3 g/cm³ (CuBe2) to 8.91 g/cm³ (CuCr1Zr).

How do I find the weight per square metre of copper sheet?

Multiply the thickness in mm by the density: 1 mm Cu-ETP sheet weighs 8.90 kg per square metre, so a 2 × 1000 × 2000 mm sheet weighs about 35.6 kg.

How much does a 50 m coil of copper tube weigh?

It depends on the size. For example, a 50 m coil of 1/4″ × 0.8 mm tube weighs about 6.2 kg, 3/8″ × 0.8 mm about 9.8 kg and 1/2″ × 0.8 mm about 13.4 kg.

Why can the delivered weight differ from the calculated weight?

The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight can differ slightly because of the thickness, diameter and wall-thickness tolerances allowed by the standards and the cutting allowance. For products sold by weight, we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.
