Stainless steel weight calculator

Work out the theoretical weight of stainless steel sheet, coil, round and hexagon bar, flat bar, angle and tube from their dimensions. Choose 304, 316, 310S or 321 (1.4541) from the grade list and the calculation uses that grade’s density.

Calculate the weight from the size, or the number of sheets needed for a target weight. Your selections are added to the quote message automatically.

How is stainless steel weight calculated?

Weight is volume multiplied by density. With all dimensions in millimetres, the result in kilograms is (ρ: density in g/cm³; 7.9 for 304; 8.0 for 316):

  • Sheet, strip and flat bar: thickness × width × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Round bar: 0.7854 × diameter² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Hexagon bar: 0.866 × across flats² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Tube and bush: 3.1416 × (outside diameter − wall) × wall × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Angle: (leg A + leg B − thickness) × thickness × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000

Example: a 2 × 1000 × 2000 mm 304 stainless steel sheet = 2 × 1000 × 2000 × 7.9 ÷ 1,000,000 = 31.6 kg.

Frequently asked questions

How much does 1 m² of stainless steel sheet weigh?

1 m² of 1 mm 304 stainless steel weighs 7.90 kg, so a 1 × 1000 × 2000 mm sheet weighs about 15.8 kg and a 2 × 1250 × 2500 mm sheet about 49.4 kg. Values for 316 are about 1.3 % higher.

Do 304 and 316 stainless steel weigh differently?

Because of its higher molybdenum and nickel content, 316 has a slightly higher density (8.0 g/cm³) than 304 (7.9 g/cm³). A 316 part of the same size is about 1.3 % heavier; the difference is small for single parts but matters for large tonnages.

How much does 1 metre of stainless steel tube weigh?

It depends on the outside diameter and wall thickness. For example, in 304 stainless steel 1 metre of 25 × 2 mm tube weighs about 1.14 kg, 48.3 × 2 mm about 2.30 kg and 60.3 × 2 mm about 2.89 kg.

How much does 1 metre of stainless steel round bar weigh?

For 304 stainless steel, 1 metre of Ø10 mm bar weighs about 0.62 kg, Ø20 mm about 2.48 kg and Ø50 mm about 15.51 kg.

Why can the delivered weight differ from the calculated weight?

The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight can differ slightly because of the thickness, diameter and wall-thickness tolerances allowed by the standards and the cutting allowance. For products sold by weight, we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.
