Stainless Steel Tube
304 and 316 stainless steel tube: EN 10217-7 / ASTM A312 tube for process and pipework, and ASTM A554 tube for decorative and structural work. Welded or seamless type and size are agreed to your requirements.
Grades and sizes
304
The most widely used austenitic stainless steel (18/8 chromium-nickel). It resists corrosion in atmospheric, water and food environments and is easy to form and weld. It is used for food and catering equipment, architectural work and general engineering. In chloride environments (seawater, brine) 316 is preferred because of the risk of pitting; for heavy-section welded fabrication the low-carbon 304L (1.4307) can be requested.
Welded tube: EN 10217-7, ASTM A312 / A554 · seamless tube: EN 10216-5, ASTM A312
316
Austenitic stainless steel containing 2.0–2.5% molybdenum. The molybdenum gives markedly better resistance than 304 to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments (seawater, brine, chlorinated chemicals). It is preferred for marine, chemical, pharmaceutical and food equipment. For welded fabrication it can also be requested as the low-carbon 316L (1.4404).

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 304 and 316?
Unlike 304, 316 contains 2.0–2.5% molybdenum. Molybdenum markedly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments (seawater, brine, chlorinated cleaning chemicals, swimming pools). For indoor, food and general fabrication applications without chlorides, 304 is sufficient and more economical.
When are 304L and 316L preferred?
The letter L denotes low carbon (max. 0.030%). Low carbon limits the chromium carbide precipitation that causes intergranular corrosion when heavy sections are welded. 304L or 316L is preferred for welded tanks, pipelines and heavy plate fabrication.
Should I choose welded or seamless tube?
Seamless tube (EN 10216-5, ASTM A312) is preferred for lines with high pressure, heavy walls or fatigue risk. Welded tube (EN 10217-7, ASTM A312) is sufficient for process lines, pipework and economical large-diameter needs. ASTM A554 welded tube is used for handrails and decorative work.
What are the designations for 304 and 316?
304: 1.4301, AISI 304, UNS S30400, JIS SUS304. 316: 1.4401, AISI 316, UNS S31600, JIS SUS316. Any of these designations can be used in your enquiry; we will match the correct material.
Why can the invoiced weight differ from the calculated weight?
The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight varies with dimensional tolerances and cutting allowance; we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.
What information should I send for a quote?
We only need the grade, size (outside diameter × wall thickness × length), quantity and delivery location. If you fill in the calculator above, these details are added to the WhatsApp message automatically.
