Stainless Steel Round Bar
304, 316 and 310S stainless steel round bar for shafts, fasteners, turned and CNC parts, food and chemical equipment and parts that operate at high temperatures. Ø15 mm and below is sold in full lengths; larger diameters are cut to the length you need.
Grades and sizes
304
The most widely used austenitic stainless steel (18/8 chromium-nickel). It resists corrosion in atmospheric, water and food environments and is easy to form and weld. It is used for food and catering equipment, architectural work and general engineering. In chloride environments (seawater, brine) 316 is preferred because of the risk of pitting; for heavy-section welded fabrication the low-carbon 304L (1.4307) can be requested.
Bar standards: EN 10088-3 · ASTM A276 / A479
316
Austenitic stainless steel containing 2.0–2.5% molybdenum. The molybdenum gives markedly better resistance than 304 to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments (seawater, brine, chlorinated chemicals). It is preferred for marine, chemical, pharmaceutical and food equipment. For welded fabrication it can also be requested as the low-carbon 316L (1.4404).
Bar standards: EN 10088-3 · ASTM A276 / A479
310S
Heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel with 24–26% chromium and 19–22% nickel. It resists scaling (oxidation) in air up to about 1050 °C and is used for furnace parts, heat-treatment fixtures, burner and boiler components. In sulphur-bearing combustion gases the service temperature falls to about 950 °C; long service between 600 and 900 °C can reduce toughness.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 304 and 316?
Unlike 304, 316 contains 2.0–2.5% molybdenum. Molybdenum markedly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments (seawater, brine, chlorinated cleaning chemicals, swimming pools). For indoor, food and general fabrication applications without chlorides, 304 is sufficient and more economical.
Up to what temperature can 310S be used?
In continuous service in air it resists scaling up to about 1050 °C. In sulphur-bearing combustion gases this limit falls to about 950 °C. In parts that operate for long periods between 600 and 900 °C, sigma phase formation can reduce toughness, which is taken into account in design.
What is the difference between cold-drawn, peeled and ground bar?
Cold-drawn bar is drawn to a close tolerance and a smooth surface and is common in small and medium diameters. Peeled bar has the hot-rolled skin machined off and is used in large diameters. Ground bar gives the closest tolerance and the best surface and is preferred for shafts and precision parts.
What are the designations for 304, 316 and 310S?
304: 1.4301, AISI 304, UNS S30400, JIS SUS304. 316: 1.4401, AISI 316, UNS S31600, JIS SUS316. 310S: 1.4845, AISI 310S, UNS S31008. Any of these designations can be used in your enquiry; we will match the correct material.
Why can the invoiced weight differ from the calculated weight?
The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight varies with dimensional tolerances and cutting allowance; we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.
What information should I send for a quote?
