Aluminium weight calculator

Work out the theoretical weight of aluminium sheet and plate, coil, round, flat, square and hexagon bar, tube and angle from their dimensions. The calculation uses the density of the alloy you choose; the difference between 5083 (2.66 g/cm³) and 7075 (2.81 g/cm³) is about 6 %.

Calculate the weight from the size, or the number of sheets needed for a target weight. Your selections are added to the quote message automatically.

How is aluminium weight calculated?

Weight is volume multiplied by density. With all dimensions in millimetres, the result in kilograms is (ρ: density in g/cm³; 2.7 for 6082; 2.66 for 5083 and 2.81 for 7075):

  • Sheet, strip and flat bar: thickness × width × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Round bar: 0.7854 × diameter² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Square bar: side² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Hexagon bar: 0.866 × across flats² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Tube and bush: 3.1416 × (outside diameter − wall) × wall × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
  • Angle: (leg A + leg B − thickness) × thickness × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000

Example: a 10 × 1000 × 2000 mm 6082 aluminium sheet = 10 × 1000 × 2000 × 2.7 ÷ 1,000,000 = 54.0 kg.

Frequently asked questions

How much does 1 m² of aluminium sheet weigh?

1 m² of 1 mm 6082 or 6061 aluminium weighs 2.70 kg, so a 2 × 1000 × 2000 mm sheet weighs about 10.8 kg and a 10 × 1000 × 2000 mm plate about 54.0 kg.

What is the density of aluminium?

We use 2.70 g/cm³ for 1050, 6061 and 6082, 2.66 g/cm³ for 5083 and 5754, 2.78 g/cm³ for 2024, 2.77 g/cm³ for 7020 and 2.81 g/cm³ for 7075. Aluminium weighs about one third as much as the same volume of steel.

How much does 1 metre of aluminium round bar weigh?

For 6082 aluminium, 1 metre of Ø20 mm bar weighs about 0.85 kg, Ø50 mm about 5.30 kg and Ø100 mm about 21.21 kg.

How is the weight of aluminium tube calculated?

Subtract the wall thickness from the outside diameter and multiply the result by the wall thickness and 3.1416 to get the cross-section; then multiply by the length and the density. For example, 1 metre of 40 × 2 mm 6082 aluminium tube weighs about 0.64 kg.

Why can the delivered weight differ from the calculated weight?

The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight can differ slightly because of the thickness, diameter and wall-thickness tolerances allowed by the standards and the cutting allowance. For products sold by weight, we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.
