Brass weight calculator
Work out the theoretical weight of brass rod, hexagon, square, flat bar, tube, sheet and strip from its dimensions. Choose MS58, MS63 or MS70 from the grade list and the calculation uses that grade’s density.
Calculate the weight from the size, or the length and number of pieces needed for a target weight. Your selections are added to the quote message automatically.
Size: Ø30 × 1000 mm, quantity: 1 (theoretical ~5.99 kg)
How is brass weight calculated?
Weight is volume multiplied by density. With all dimensions in millimetres, the result in kilograms is (ρ: density in g/cm³; 8.47 for MS58; 8.44 for MS63 and 8.53 for MS70):
- Sheet, strip and flat bar: thickness × width × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
- Round bar: 0.7854 × diameter² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
- Square bar: side² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
- Hexagon bar: 0.866 × across flats² × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
- Tube and bush: 3.1416 × (outside diameter − wall) × wall × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
- Angle: (leg A + leg B − thickness) × thickness × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
- U-channel: (base + 2 × leg height − 2 × thickness) × thickness × length × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
Example: a MS58 brass round bar of Ø30 mm and 1000 mm length = 0.7854 × 30² × 1000 × 8.47 ÷ 1,000,000 = 6.0 kg.

Frequently asked questions
How much does 1 metre of brass rod weigh?
For MS58 brass rod, 1 metre of Ø20 mm weighs about 2.66 kg, Ø30 mm about 5.99 kg and Ø50 mm about 16.63 kg. Weight increases with the square of the diameter, so doubling the diameter quadruples the weight.
What is the density of brass?
We use 8.47 g/cm³ for MS58 (CuZn39Pb3), 8.44 g/cm³ for MS63 (CuZn37) and 8.53 g/cm³ for MS70 (CuZn30). Density falls slightly as the zinc content rises, while the lead in MS58 raises it slightly.
How is the weight of brass hexagon bar calculated?
The cross-section is the across-flats size squared, multiplied by 0.866; this is then multiplied by the length and the density. For example, 1 metre of 17 mm A/F MS58 hexagon weighs about 2.12 kg and 1 metre of 24 mm A/F about 4.23 kg.
How much does 1 m² of 1 mm brass sheet weigh?
1 m² of 1 mm MS63 brass sheet weighs 8.44 kg, so a 1 × 1000 × 2000 mm sheet weighs about 16.9 kg and a 2 × 1000 × 2000 mm sheet about 33.8 kg.
Why can the delivered weight differ from the calculated weight?
The calculator gives the theoretical weight. The actual weight can differ slightly because of the thickness, diameter and wall-thickness tolerances allowed by the standards and the cutting allowance. For products sold by weight, we invoice on the actual weight as weighed.
